***************************************************************************
Dear Netware Manager,
Many thanks for your interest in Protec Net for Novell. The fact that
you have this product in your hands indicates that you have some interest in
extending your control from the server to other parts of your network.
Protec Net is designed just for that. The product provides a host of benefits
which will become apparent as you work through them.
And, if what you see is not enough, there is a whole lot more in store in new
versions during the coming months.
If you purchase this product, you will automatically receive all the version
updates for 12 months after your purchase.
This Evaluation Pack is only suitable for installation on 1 Novell Server and
is restricted to install on 2 workstations. Once you have installed the
product and set up the system to suit your environment, you need not remove
it or change it in anyway if you wish to purchase the product. Simply place
your order with your local dealer, and we will upgrade this evaluation pack
over the phone.
Yes, that is all it takes. A quick phone call can increase this licence to
a 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 user licence.
Please read the attached .txt files before you proceed with installation of this
software.
Good Luck, and I hope that we can be of continuous service to you and your
company.
Yours sincerely,
Garth McLeod
Managing Director

Protec NET 4.1, 21st November 1994
Technical Bulletin No. 008
--------------------------
1. Problems may be experienced in certain configurations with Netware 4.0
and we would have to advise that at this stage we can only guarantee
compatibility with Novell Netware versions 3.11 and 3.12.
2. In evaluation, you may like to re-initialise the databases without
re-installing, and this can be achieved with the following command
(you will of course be logged in as supervisor);
PINIT /R /OPEN
However, this command does not clear out any user shells or Protec NET
script commands from the respective logon scripts. To do this you must
actually remove Protec NET with the command RMPROTEC.
3. Denying access to COM and LPT ports works fine so long as the program
in question uses DOS. However, some programs talk to these ports
directly (ie. using OUTP) and though we do deny access to the port,
other applications may not be able to handle the denial, and will simply
sit there waiting. In technical parlance, this is known as 'hanging'.
4. Using certain programs that access the disk in an unorthodox way
(ie. Windows File Manager, Xtree Gold, etc.) you may think permissions
are not working because you might be able to view restricted files and
directories. However, you cannot actually access them, so permissions
are not in fact compromised.
5. We make some initial checks to ensure that CHKDSK will not run, but it
should be understood that keeping users from dangerous commands is the
System Manager's responsibility. In particular, we recommend that users
be locked from the following commands;
CHKDSK, SCANDISK (DOS 6.x), Norton Utilities, PC-Tools, DEBUG,
and so on....
Disallowing low-level IO can help minimise possible damage, but we cannot
guarantee it will prevent ALL malicious attempts.
6. With low-level IO disallowed, Windows 32-bit access will also be
disabled.
7. After installing the number of allowed workstations (2 in the case of
an evaluation) you may wish to remove one, and install on another
workstation. In order to achieve this, you should perform the following
steps;
a. Run PSECURE in the \system\protec directory
b. Under the Workstation menu, select 'Add/Remove workstation'
c. Go to the appropriate record and press <DEL>
d. Under the File menu, select the option 'Optimise data files'
After this, you will be able to install on a different workstation.
8. Drive level encryption is not fully implemented in this release. File
and directory encryption works fine, so the same result can be
achieved.
9. While using the file selection utility for encryption, permissions and
program selection, if you try to access files in the root directory of
the first network volume you may experience frequent share violations.
They will clear, but are due to accessing BACKOUT.TTS, a file in almost
continuous use by Netware. This will be filtered out in the next
release...
10. Using VLMs one must have LASTDRIVE set also.
11. If you put the AUDIT switches on, then it is a good idea to increase
the size of the AUDIT MEMORY BUFFER.
12. There are occasions when we will not install on to a workstation due to
some or other problem with AUTOEXEC. It is wise therefore, to ensure that
recipient workstations are in a reasonable state, and that there are no
commands in the AUTOEXEC that will prevent the running of LOADER (which
we place at the end of the file.) Also, ensure that the recipient
workstations have calls to the network drivers located in this file.
Valid network drivers are contained within the NETWORK DRIVERS section
of the Protec NET setup file PSETUP.INF.
Reasons as to why a workstation could not be installed are contained in
the comments field at the end of the workstation record, under the
Install/Update/Remove protec option of PSECURE.
13. Due to problems between Netware 3.xx login and DOS environments, it has
been necessary to provide our own login/logout/map programs. These are
intended to work identically to Netware programs, except that they fix
the environment problem, and they are Protec aware. However, under
certain conditions, they may not appear to work exactly the same, but
this should not affect any login/logout/map functions.
And remember, the original programs are copied to the \login\old
directory, and renamed with a NV prefix (nvlogin, nvlogout, nvmap)
so if in doubt, you may always use these.
In the next release of Protec Net (with Netware 4.xx compatibility) a
new method has been employed that will clear the environment problems
without replacing Netware programs.
